Over/Under: Five Thoughts on Oklahoma State's Season Opener Against South Dakota State

STILLWATER – The start of the 2024 season is FINALLY here as Oklahoma State kicks things off at home against South Dakota State on Saturday at 1 p.m. CT.

Now that I’m back full-time with Pokes Report, we’re bringing back a popular series, Over/Under. 

After reading through the article, we ask that you drop a comment below to give your thoughts on if the Pokes will go over/under on each of the topics. Even though it’s Over/Under, much like Vegas, you can choose to push a topic if you feel it won’t be over or under. 

Over/Under two rushing touchdowns for Ollie Gordon

The reigning Doak Walker Award winner, Ollie Gordon, is itching to get things going this season against the Jack Rabbits. OGII posted three games last season with three or more rushing touchdowns, four against West Virginia, three against Houston and five against BYU. He also posted two games with two touchdowns, Cincinnati and Oklahoma.

Over/Under 250 passing yards for Alan Bowman

Bowman posted seven games in his first season in 2023 with 250+ plus yards, with 278 against Iowa State, 336 against Kansas, 286 against Cincy, 334 against OU, 348 against Houston, 321 against BYU and 402 against Texas A&M in the bowl game. He also threw for 250 against Texas in the Big 12 title game.

Bowman’s more comfortable with the playbook and the team going into his second season.

Over/Under one turnover created by the Cowboy defense

The Jackrabbits had just five interceptions and eight lost fumbles in 2023, with the starting quarterback Mark Gronowski, who threw the five picks. The Cowboys recovered 11 fumbles and picked off 15 passes in 2023. 

Over/Under 12 tackles for Nick Martin

Martin led the Cowboys in 2023 with 140 total tackles, 83 of which were solo stops. His 140 tackles for 35 more than the next closest Cowboy defender and his 83 solo stops were 21 more than the next Cowboy as well.

Over/Under 60 yards per kickoff for Logan Ward

Ward was solid in 2023 for the Pokes as he had 85 total kickoffs for an average of 62.5 yards per kick. 43 of those kicks went for touchbacks. With another offseason under his belt, can Ward improve on last year’s numbers?

Call me crazy,,,, I don't think it will be close. And most of these guys will get pulled early so the backups can play. Just my opinion!

Over - OGIII with 3 rushing TDs
Over - Bowman with 300 passing yards
Over - Defense gets an INT and a fumble recovery
Push - About right for Nick to get 12 tackles. And at least 4 of them are slobberknockers
Push - About right for 60yd/KO, less than 10yd/return

I'm going to go ahead and be the one to call you crazy. Just like Colorado vs. NDSU Bison last night. Last possession wins the game. OSU is better than Colorado, but SDSU is better than NDSU too. That game was a good gauge. This will be very, very close. If this was game 9, maybe not. But game 1? I'm worried.

just for clarification.... ND State is ranked #2 FCS preseason, and SD State is ranked #1, so I'm not sure how you conclude who's better (based on past teams? I don't think so). And NDSU has

if you want to base it on history, then there is this : No FCS program has claimed more national championships than North Dakota State football, winner of nine of 11 FCS titles from the 2011-21 college football seasons

CU has 42 new players in the portal, but they are good players, and their QB is excellent..

You're not the only one....I'm worried about this game too. The best QB is on the other sideline and South Dakota State is well coached simply plays very good football. I know people love to say that the (fill in the FBS team name) is bigger and faster etc. and that is true. Yet, FCS teams still manage to beat FBS teams and South Dakota State is one of the best FCS programs.

I'll be happy with a win by any margin! I'm not being negative about the Pokes I just have a lot of respect for the best FCS programs.

Not only is SDSU an excellent team, but they have the "game of the year" in Stillwater tomorrow. Motivation is hard to coach or self create. No doubt OSU has tried to ready themselves for game 1, but for the Jackrabbits......those kids have wanted this game since middle school! A difference for OSU vs. CU hopefully is our experience playing together under established systems/coordinators. CU was trying to put a new team together. OSU is trying to improve an existing, very successful team. Having said that, I'd welcome an 8 or 9 point win!
