Pitchers Bodendorf and Youngerman Are the Primary Cowboys Honored by Big 12 Baseball
STILLWATER – Oklahoma State will have another weapon in Arlington, Texas when they open the Big 12 Tournament on Wednesday (May 21) with a first round game with Baylor at 4 p.m. The weapon will be that boulder-sized chip on the shoulder of Cowboys like Nolan Schubart, Colin Brueggemann, Ian Daugherty, and Brayden Smith. No Oklahoma State hitter or position player, including the preseason Big 12 Player-of-the-Year Schubart got any mention on the honors list or All-Big 12 teams voted on by the leagues coaches. The coaches voted but could not include their own players on their ballot. Harrison Bodendorf was named the Co-Newcomer of the Year along with Arizona State’s Matt King. Bodendorf was also a first-team All-Big 12 starting pitcher and Sean Youngerman was voted a second team All-Big 12 starting and relief pitcher both.
Bodendorf finished with a 10-1 record in 15 appearances as he led the league in wins. His 2.43 ERA was tied for the second-best in the league while he held batters to a .194 batting average, also second-best in the Conference. Bodendorf did not allow a single stolen base when he was pitching. That is pretty incredible, even for a lefthander. He is the third Cowboy in five years to win a share of Big 12 Newcomer of the Year, joining Christian Encarnacion-Strand in 2021 and Tyler Wulfert in 2023.
Youngerman had 19 appearances and five starts. He was 3-1 with four saves and a 2.08 era. Youngerman struck out 54 hitters and walked just six. Opposing hitters had just a .184 average against Youngerman.
Oklahoma State head coach Josh Holliday told Tulsa World reporter Daniel Allen that Youngerman would start the Baylor game.
“He’s the most rested and prepared pitcher that we have with the short week prior to last week’s series and the concept of the (conference) tournament,” Holliday said.
Schubart struggled early in Big 12 play this season and on the year and is hitting .288 with seven doubles, 17 home runs, and 53 RBI. Brueggemann hit .312 with 11 doubles, a triple, 14 home runs and 51 RBI. Daugherty, who got off to a hot start had 10 doubles, six home runs, and 21 RBI.
Brayden Smith, the junior transfer second baseman was both the Big 12 Player-of-the-Week and Newcomer-of-the-Week for the final week of the regular season and the Cowboys sweep over Arizona State. He hit .313 with 14 doubles, two triples, 10 home runs, and 36 RBI. As a team Oklahoma State hit .256.
The Big 12 Tournament opener for the Cowboys on Wednesday is again at 4 p.m.
