Breaking: Oklahoma State Fires Mike Gundy After 21 Years

STILLWATER – Oklahoma State has informed Mike Gundy he has been relieved of head coaching duties effectively immediately.

Oklahoma State has announced a press conference with AD Chad Weiberg will take place at 3:30 p.m. in the Gallagher-Iba Arena theater room.

“Cowboy Football reached an unprecedented level of success and national prominence under Coach Gundy’s leadership,” OSU Athletic Director Chad Weiberg said. “I believe I speak for OSU fans everywhere when I say that we are grateful for all he did to raise the standard and show us all what is possible for Oklahoma State football.”

The news comes less than a week after losing to Tulsa, 19-12, the first home loss to the Golden Hurricane since 1951. It also marked the 11th straight loss to an FBS program dating back to the start of Big 12 play in 2024. 

With the firing of the head coach, a 30-day transfer portal window has opened for the current roster.

Gundy took the podium of his weekly media availability on Monday to address his future.

“I love what I do. I have the exact same amount of energy that I've had from day one doing this.” He continued with "When I was hired here to take this job, ever since that day, I've put my heart and soul into this. I will continue to do that until at some point if I say I don't want to do it or somebody else says we don't want you to do it."

Gundy had been the head coach of the Cowboys since the 2005 season, compiling a 170-90 overall record, making him the winningest head coach in Oklahoma State history. He was named the Big 12 Coach of the Year three times in 2010, 2021 and 2023, which included being named the Eddie Robinson Coach of the Year and won the Paul “Bear” Bryant Award after winning a Big 12 title in 2011.

Following the 2024 season, where the Cowboys went 3-9, 0-9 in Big 12 play, Gundy fired his entire coaching staff, and rebuilt nearly the entire roster through the transfer portal, adding more than 60 players. 

The Cowboys have started the 2025 season 1-2, with a win over FCS Tennessee Martin, 27-7, a blowout loss to Oregon on the road, 69-3, and the 19-12 loss to Tulsa.

Under the revised contract Gundy received at the end of last year, he’s owed $15 million if he’s released without cause before the end of December 2027.
