NORMAN, Okla. – Oklahoma State rallied late and then defeated Oklahoma in extra innings Sunday as the 18th-ranked Cowboys were 8-7 winners in 12 innings in the Bedlam Series finale at L. Dale Mitchell Park.

With the win, OSU improved to 25-14-1 overall and 8-10 in Big 12 Conference play, while OU is 22-20 and 6-9 in the league.

Brock Mathis' RBI single with two outs in the 12th innings proved to be the difference, and Kale Davis picked up the win on the mound.

Davis was outstanding to secure the win for the Cowboys. The right-hander worked 4 1/3 shutout innings, allowing just three hits and tying a career high with seven strikeouts, including two in a perfect bottom of the 12th.

Max Hewitt had another strong day at the plate for the Pokes, going 2-for-3 with a home run, while Caeden Trenkle also homered. Carson McCusker led OSU with three hits.

OSU took a 1-0 lead in the opening inning as Jake Thompson followed back-to-back hits by Hewitt and Christian Encarnacion-Strand with a sacrifice fly to left field.

The Sooners would tie the score in the second on a solo home run by Brett Squires, his third homer of the series, and went on top later in the inning on a three-run shot by Conor McKenna with two outs that put OU up, 4-1.

The Pokes used the long ball to regain the lead in the fourth. Hewitt opened the frame with an opposite-field homer to left field, and Trenkle put OSU back in front with a three-run blast later in the inning to make the score 5-4.

That lead held until the fifth when OU pushed across a run, taking advantage of a leadoff walk and plating the tying run on a two-out RBI single by Jimmy Crooks.

The game remained deadlocked at 5-5 until the eighth when OU rallied for a pair of runs, the first coming on a throwing error and the second an RBI single.

Down to their final three outs and trailing by two, the Cowboys responded in the ninth. They cut their deficit to one when Trenkle scored on a throwing error, then tied the game on an RBI single by McCusker.

After going scoreless over the first two frames in extras, the Cowboys got a one-out single from McCusker in the 12th. Following a fly out, Cade Cabbiness singled to put runners on the corners and set the stage for Mathis, who came through with what proved to be the game-winning hit on a single to left-center field.

OSU returns to action Friday when the Cowboys open a three-game series at Kansas.
