STILLWATER – We’re nearly a week removed for the end of the season for the Oklahoma State men’s basketball program. The season didn’t go the way Mike Boynton and Co. wanted it to go as the Pokes missed out on the NCAA tournament and fell to North Texas in the quarterfinals of the NIT, a game which was played in Gallagher-Iba Arena.
“As far as the season, obviously fell short of our ultimate team goals, which is obviously playing in the NCAA tournament, and not just getting there, but having a team that’s capable of having success,” said Mike Boynton. “There were a lot of reasons why that happened. Some of it was outside of control, but there were several things that we could’ve done better to ensure our position. Ultimately, that’s on me and it's my job to put our program in position that we are not on that line, or fighting the last couple of weeks, but that we have consistent success throughout the year.”
Cowboys’ head coach Mike Boynton met with the media on Monday morning to put a bow on the season and look ahead to an offseason which is filled with several tough decision and questions. First and foremost, probably the most difficult question of what’s the roster going to look like? The Cowboys gain two scholarships from the departures of Caleb Asberry and Bernard Kouma, both of which players have no more eligibility. They’ll gain two scholarships following the NCAA sanctions, but the coaching staff has signed four true freshmen and are set to sign a fifth in Eric Dailey in April.
Other than Asberry and Kouma, every scholarship player on the 2022-23 roster, including Chris Harris Jr., has at least one year of eligibility remaining. History tells us at least two(ish) players will enter the transfer portal but could be as many as four. So, certainly a lot of work to be done in the offseason.
