Oklahoma State Falls to 1-3 In Big 12 Play Following 83-62 Blowout Loss to Utah

Oklahoma State’s shooting woes showed up in the first half against Utah as they fell to 1-3 in Big 12 play with a 21-point 83-62 loss to the Utes.

With the loss, the Cowboys fell to 9-6 on the season, and will travel to Provo, UT, for a showdown with BYU on Tuesday.

“Three-point shooting [defense] was an emphasis, rebounding was an emphasis,” head coach Steve Lutz said after the game. “We barely won the rebounding battle by one, you win it, but you don’t really win it – we had 18 offensive rebounds, but we never rewarded ourselves with points. But at the end of the day, no matter how you slice it, we didn’t compete hard enough on the defensive end to win. You can’t allow people to shoot 56-7-8, whatever that percentage was, from the floor and expect to win anywhere, no matter if it’s at home, no matter if you’re plane’s on time, that doesn’t matter. What matters is that you compete defensively and we did not do so.”

The Cowboys shot just 23% from the field in the first half and 15% from 3-point range. Marchelus Avery led the way in scoring with nine points in the first half, but on 3-of-10 shooting from the field and 0-of-3 from 3-point range.

They shot much better from the field in the second half, nearly 44% from the field and 40% from 3-point range. But Utah shot nearly 67% from the floor in the second half and 50% from 3-point range. They also outscored the Pokes in the paint 46-24.

The Cowboys finished the game with just 15 second chance points on 18 offensive rebounds and just five fastbreak points.

Bryce Thompson led the way with 16 points on 7-of-13 shooting from the floor, with four rebounds and three assists. Avery finished the game with 13 points.

The Utes started the game on a 12-0 run in three and a half minutes before Brandon Newman hit two free throws, followed by a layup from Avery. The Utes kept a double-digit lead for the rest of the first half, with the Pokes cut their deficit down to just 11 at the break following a 5-0 run in the last minute and a half.

The Utes really turned it up in the first 10 minutes of the second half as they extended their lead out to 22 points, before a 3-pointer from Ousmane, leading to a Utah timeout with a 19-point lead over the Pokes.

Ousmane didn’t hit his first bucket of the game until the 12:24 mark of the second half. He then hit a free throw and 3-pointer to give him six quick points in less than two minutes. He finished with eight points on 3-of-10 shooting.

Clearly one of those game where we didn't match up well...

They had 3 guys that killed us, 6-8, 6-9, 6-10, and they had 8 players over 6-8.

Ezra Ausar had a season-high 21 points, sophomores Keanu Dawes and Jake Wahlin both scored a career-best 16

Ausar made 7 of 12 shots from the floor and 7 of 8 free throws
Wahlin hit all five of his shots with three 3-pointers and all three of his free throws.
Dawes buried 8 of 10 shots off the bench and grabbed a game-high nine rebounds.

We got killed in the paint, and 2nd chance points.

That was just poor defense. At one point in the game they had five dunks in a row. I will stop because I have nothing good to say. What a mess.

In 4 B12 games

Shooting % : 26, 33, 48, 33

Opp Shooting % : 42, 42, 51, 56

Delta : -16, -9, -3, -23

Opp combined league record excluding games v OSU: 3-9 (UH is 3-0).

It would not matter if we shot 100% if we only made 5 baskets. Meaning, shooting % doesn't mean much about a team, only about an individual game. It does show our defense needs to improve a lot, but we already knew we be severely disadvantaged inside, and our 3-pt shooting was suspect.

I believe most fans know that we're near the bottom of the league, and why. Shooting % is only a small part of our problems, IMO.

I think the coaches and players are doing the best they can with what we have to work with. Lutz had to scrape to put a team on the floor. It's tough being totally irrelevant in both football and men's basketball at the same time - it's been a while since that's been the case. Hopefully better days ahead. And that's not to take anything away from wrestling and women's basketball- they are both awesome and a lot of fun to watch.

Dude... and Softball.... how could you leave out Softball? (or Soccer?)

regardless, I think this BB team is better than what we had most recent seasons. We'll see how they do down the stretch and whether Lutz can keep them motivated when the tough conference play begins.

He's done it before, but this is his first time trying at the ultra-talented P4 Conf. level. There wasn't anything in the tank when Lutz took over either. Prior coaches inherited a decent core group of experienced P4 talent, but not this time.

Frankly, I'm thrilled to death about where the BB program is right now, because as you say, better days ahead!

LOL. - shooting % doesn't mean much about a team, only about an individual game.

Holy cow, that is just mind blowing.

Agree. I'm not down on Lutz, but this version of Cowboy basketball is dreadful. At this point, easily the worst version (relative to the rest of the conference) I've ever witnessed.

You must have missed the Cowboy team from last season. (It wasn't pretty),

You could end up being correct, but at this point, I'm gonna have to give it up to last years as most dismal, although we may be picking at nits here.

2023-24
Non-Conf 8-5 (some bad losses)
Conference 0-3 (though 1/13 - in middle of an 0-6 conf start)

We started conference play 0-6 and finished tied for last in the conference - how's that for "relative to the rest of the conference"?

2024-25
Non-Conf 7-3 (all losses against solid teams)
Conference 1-3 (through 1/11)

I have hope that we can do at least as well as the 4-14 conf. season of last year.

I believe that is the key for me, this season I have hope, where as, last few years I had zero hope.

You are correct on the Spring sports! Ready for those to crank up too. And track! Plenty of good in Cowboy athletics- just tough sledding in two of the big ones. I do agree- I love the way our basketball team plays and fights. With a bit of time I think Lutz can do good things. Football….I am excited for every season , and this coming season is no exception. Hard to tell how it will shake out. I'm usually opposite on my expectations vs how it actually goes (2021 and 2024 being two opposite extreme examples). Excited nonetheless for the complete make over team. We shall see….
