Things Have Deteriorated, Media and Fans Are Better Loyal, True, and Classy

PHOENIX, Ariz. – You don’t have to like the result of the Guaranteed Rate Bowl. Things have changed in a calendar year. In a few days it will be the year anniversary of Oklahoma State pulling off the thrilling comeback to beat Notre Dame in the Fiesta Bowl and finish as a top 10 team with a 12-2 record. Tuesday night Oklahoma State at least kept pushing and even lucked out with a fourth quarter touchdown and added a field goal to get back in a game that looked long gone before losing to Wisconsin 24-17.

Sitting in the postgame press conference between two of his players in Jason Taylor II and Brennan Presley, Cowboys head coach Mike Gundy did not deserve this.

Gundy was asked by a reporter whether he planned to make staff changes. Anyone with experience as a competitor would know that is too soon to go that direction. The wounds are too fresh from a season with a rough finish. Besides, these are coaches and staff that have been responsible for a lot of wins and success. They deserve more respect as does Gundy and those players sitting with him.

Those people will all be on a charter flight home tomorrow and it is not fair for wives and children to hear that from a press conference and wonder if their lives are about to change drastically. There is a procedure. Is Mike Gundy going to examine his program, players, schemes, coaches, staff. Yes, he does every season. Could he make changes? Sure, and he has before. Is he going to announce it first to the media? No.

There is a classy way to run a program and to deal with people that have worked hard and given great effort to contribute to a football program. That is the way Mike Gundy has and will continue to run his program.

There is also a way for media members to act and conduct themselves. I get it. The social media and Twitter world where people can act foolish and choose if they want to be identified has outrageous takes all the time. I’ve dealt with some of this myself this season at Triple Play Sports Radio. Fans can, and often do step over the line. It is, unfortunately the society we live in. Media don’t need to act like fans. They too are professionals. They are supposed to be.

If there will be changes, they will happen. I know that Mike Gundy intends to change some facets of the program. There are things that he firmly believes can be done better and must be done better. There will be a time and a place to address any and all of those. It was not in that media room in Chase Field after a tough loss to Wisconsin.

As a highest paid individual in state of Oklahoma, Gundy should expect tough questions from anyone from media all the time.

Gundy sanpped yesterday and threatened livelihood of a member. Sooner he does something about it, the better. Expecting media members to not ask tough questions is laughable. And trying to control them using media access is further laughable.

And going after the reporter here in this story is not really helpful for Gundy or OSU.

Calling PFB media is laughable. It's amazing they are credentialed with their past.

No one seems to know for sure. It just went down a few weeks ago without any warning. The orangepower Twitter account posted that they are looking for a solution to get it back up and running, but they haven't given any details about what happened.

I noticed that Greg Bartlett no longer works for OSU. He appears to work for UC Davis now. I don't know if that has anything to do with this or if it's just a coincidence.

Hopefully they'll get it back up and running soon. I always liked it.

For those of you that think Gundy might be wrong or handled this incorrectly, check the Fox News Website.

Gundy has virtually 100% support from the commenters for taking up for his coaches and his players and the respect for them. That goes for me too. This was inappropriate to ask in this setting and the coach should never respond to these questions in the public. The public is tired of media sound bites. I sure am.

Pat Jones on the Animal says calling the reporter ignorant was a compliment to what he should have been called. He also says the guys calling the plays this year were the same ones that won 12 games last year and they just didn't turn stupid this year.

Coach Gundy's has established a "Cowboy Culture." He talks about it often. Hard work, loyalty, cooperation, love of the game, and maintaining high character traits are just a few of the attributes he teaches his players. I like how he holds his team accountable. Coaching is a tough job. It has high and lows. It can test you in many ways that many jobs do not. When I saw the post game I was I thought to myself immediately that what Gundy said was not the "Cowboy Culture" he has preached. Under no circumstance can you call a person an "ass" or "ignorant" in public and then preach "Cowboy Culture." Coach Gundy has to hold himself accountable just the same as he holds his team accountable. He is the face of the team and the university. Weiberg must address this with him in private and Gundy needs to make an apology to the reporter. You can tell Gundy has been frustrated with this year. However, 7-6 records will be forgotten in time, but his verbal name calling in public can quickly erase all the good he has accomplished. He needs to address this and make this right.

GreyGhost,

I agree with number 2. After the bs performance by our offense this year, I believe I would be a little less arrogant in my response.

There has to be staff changes on offense. My goodness, play calling and offensive line play have been pathetic all year. If I was as inept as Dickey and Dunn, you would not have to fire me. I would resign.
The OLine and OC playcalling have sucked for much more than a year.
This year just magnified how it's deteriorating because of poor recruiting and poor coaching.

This is a business. This college football is the 800lb gorilla propping up most universities.
Coaches, most with families, know that they have to produce if they want to eat.
Of course, you can always get a job at UNLV or Georgia State if you want to continue to show mediocre to poor resutls.

The media, as brusk as they can be sometimes, is there to ask the Who, What, When, Where and Why. They ask the questions most of your are too thin skinned to ask, but you want to know.
You want coddling, then keep paying attention to the MSM's handling of any Democrat and especially that idiot in the White House.

Gundy needs to answer those questions. I'm of the opinion that Gundy is lazy and doesn't like to spend the effort to recruit or hire.
The Transfer Portal may be the best thing for Gundy actually.
But he's got to have better coaches. You can see the better coaches all around the Big 12. So, it can be done.
I know there are rules, but do we really want to follow them now?

In my opinion, it was a very poor question to ask at that press conference. What did he expect to learn at that point? Yes, I plan to fire ______ and _______? The assistants had their families there at the bowl with the team all week hanging out together like a big family. We talked to the family of one of the assistants we have known for 20 plus years. You can't expect a head coach to comment on such a question asked at a dumb time. He could not have expected a substantive response.

Do we need to look at replacing some assistants? You bet we do.

Now, did Mike handle the question properly? No and he probably should issue a press release or something to do some damage control.

Gundy is 3-15 against OU and has won one conference championship in 18 years. TCU is in playoff with a first year head coach. Gundy enjoys being a jerk and acts like he has Nick Saban's record. Would Alabama or any respectable program keep Gundy with his record against his biggest rival and one conference championship in 18 years? Of course not, but OSU kisses Gundy's ass and thinks he's a God. He's not a leader and handled a valid question like the narcissist he's. So much for his body language BS he's always preaching.

Can always count on RA to kiss Gundy's ass to keep his access to players. Robert is a Gundy puppet.

I agree, and I know several players who are not scholarship, that bleed Orange. Not the money or fame, just the heart to play for the program, as a team/family. Having money is great, but at the end of the day it's the family you have or the family you create around you. Sadly it takes some people too long to understand that. If these players want to treat this like a business, than the Programs needs to give them what they want, cut em lose when they don't perform. The same can be said about coaches too.

OP members moving here or GoPokes. If Bartlett moved to California this is my guess of why OP folded. Bartlett was over the prior GoPokes web design management as well back in the old days.

I like OP for their baseball coverage as the other sites have limited baseball. Where is the Chairman now as he is the baseball guy I like to follow?

I agree with this post 1,000%. It's not fun getting tough questions but it comes with the job.

One note about the reporter who asked the question - I have met him and he is friends with my eldest son. He is a talented young journalist and strikes me as a fair person in addition to being "loyal and true." He presents OSU in a positive light whenever possible and I was much more taken aback by the response than the question.

I stole this from an article I read on another sports blog today, so I give credit to whoever wrote it. On top of that, I'm just a rancher that lives 20 miles from any public utilities other than electricity. At any rate, the author was discussing people's desire for gundy to move on. I agree that he (gundy) is paid a significant amount of money to perform highly, but his following comment resonated with me: "I also know that the grass is always greener over the septic tank, so be careful what you wish for".

Mike needs to expect some questions to be asked that are direct. He's been given generational wealth by the Oklahoma State people who donate, buy tickets, and support THEIR PROGRAM! All fans want to know what's going to be done to answer for six solid weeks of crap football averaging 14 points per game with ZERO improvement. It goes with the territory EVEN AT OKLAHOMA STATE!

Honestly it's not a question to ever ask. Personnel decisions impact real live people and fans and attention seeking journalists should just wait until the changes are announced. They know they aren't going to find out until then so why do it?

Once it's announced ask away, until then ask something relevant about the game that you could get an answer for.

I don't completely agree with RA, but the national media folks are attacking RA now. That seems very unfair to me. They are attacking RA's writing of all things. RA is just doing his job. He isn't trying to win a Pulitzer. He is covering sports for crying out loud. Give RA a break. He has a duty here to defend Gundy. Nothing wrong with that.

There was absolutely nothing wrong with that question. It's routine and Mike could have easily made into a non-story. I subscribe to this website because I think RA does a wonderful job in recruiting especially around the summer camps. But let's be real, he's little more than a Gundy mouthpiece and I do find it disappointing that he never asks any tonight questions of Mike. That last night is the basics of what journalism is supposed to look like, an attempt to hold someone accountable and understand their mindset as they are about to make decisions they are paid $7mil to make. Unfortunately, Mike reacted harshly because he's been able to skip basic questions for so long due to chummy nature he has with certain media (specifically RA), it's nice that someone is back to trying to hold Mike accountable. I wanted that question asked, it's not just that outlet asking, it's me, the fan, his stakeholder, asking through the media as my intermediary. So Gundy wasn't just telling PFB off, he's telling me off, which is not appreciated.

Question. Does the IRS hold you accountable for your gains and losses in the market? Absolutely. Are you accountable for the tax consequences of your gains and losses 15 minutes after the market closes on Dec 31? Of course not. There's a reasonable and appropriate time to be held accountable for your market decisions and ultimate results. Just like there's a reasonable and appropriate time to hold a HC accountable for his decisions and ultimate results. 15 minutes after the last game of the season ain't the right time. The reporter, as you imply otherwise, should not get kudos for stupidity. But Gundy shouldn't get a pass for his tone. But he was spot on with his message.

Greg Bartlett had a post on twitter or instagram saying that they should have the problems worked out soon.

from looking at WHOIS, it appears that OP had a certificate that expired in November, my guess is that the DNS renewal fell through the cracks and now he's scrambling to restore it. Sometimes folks will grab up names that become available and then hold the name for ransom, but it doesn't appear that is the case here.

if any experts out there can decipher it better, the last registration entry was on Dec 20, so it looks like it's in progress.

ooops..... after 21 years at OSU, looks like he took a job at UC Davis in Sept and forgot to update the contact information on his OP website. I presume he'll get it back up, since he is an orange-blood through and through... his family name is on one of the OSU Buildings (The Bartlett Center for the Visual Arts)

Bingo Gumby, it was more the tone and using the word a** during his answer that got peoples gander up! Just for a little history lesson after the total clunker we dropped at the end of the 2009 season with the shut out loss to OU and the really horrid performance against Ole Miss in the Cotton Bowl Berry Tramel and Bill Haisten asked Mike I the post game locker room about changes to the staff and him giving up play calling duties and he said there would be NO changes made! A week later he hires Dana Holgersen and Kasey Dunn and Haisten and Tramel were hopping mad about being lied to and wrote none to kind articles going after Mike about lying to them and he comes back at them and said AT THAT TIME AFTER THE GAME HE HAD NO PLANS TO MAKE CHANGES BUT THEN A COUPLE OF DAYS LATER CHANGED HIS MIND! It was an LOL moment!!!
