Reports: BYU, Cincinnati, Houston and UCF Submit Applications To Join Big 12 Conference

(This article has been updated to include the new information reported on Thursday)

According to multiple reports on Wednesday, including The Athletic, both Cincinnati and UCF have officially submitted applications to join the Big 12 Conference. Late Wednesday night, Brett McMurphy tweeted the other two schools in the mix, BYU and Houston, have also submitted their applications.

There have been several reports out of Cincinnati area stating confirmation from university sources about the Cincinnati submitting an application to the Big 12 office, as well as a report by the Orlando Sentinel confirming UCF’s application.

As Pokes Report publisher Robert Allen has stated multiple times, the eight remaining Big 12 schools will hold a vote on Friday to accept these four schools, which McMurphy reported all eight remaining schools are set to vote yes. A news conference is schedules for Friday.

This news follows our report on Pokes Report from last week about Big 12 commissioner Bob Bowlsby reaching out, as well as traveling to BYU, Cincinnati, Houston and UCF.

Mike Gundy gave statements on both Cincinnati and UCF on Monday at his weekly media press conference.

“Central Florida has 71,000 students, And they're in a heck of a television market. They have a heck of a recruiting base, and they've played good football,” Gundy said.

“A lot of people live in that part of the country, and that logo has grown in popularity in the last few years,” Gundy said of Cincinnati on Monday. “They're winning. Winning is important, and a somewhat extended period of winning is important, I would think, to these television people.”

Cincinnati, Houston and UCF are currently in the AAC, and the AAC requires its member schools to provide 27 months’ notice if the plan on leaving and pay a $10 million exit fee. However, when UConn left the AAC, they paid a $17 million exit fee following only 12 months’ notice. So, even with a possible invite, it’s unclear as to when the four schools would join the Big 12.

A much more competitive and fair conference. No artificial media darlings, no $200 million plus athletic programs. I expect 2 or 3 schools will move ahead of the rest as the bell-cows of the new Big XII. That's just somewhat the nature of college sports as winning facilitates better recruiting which facilitates winning. But at least the playing field will be more level. And perhaps we keep a good portion of Texas high school players interested in the Big XII with Houston added to the TCU (DFW) impact, Baylor (Waco/DFW/Austin) and Texas Tech (west Texas) ties. (Especially if OU and/or UT flounder in the SEC). Plus we at least perhaps pry Florida and Ohio/Pennsylvania open a bit more. Tulsa has had some success with big lineman recruiting up there for years. I look forward to this. Half the Big 8 is still in place.....a few new interesting travel sites gained! Certainly better than going to Norman. Bye OU!

I am a grad - class of '74. i Must say, not having to play ou and not having to deal with the most obnoxious fan base in the galaxy is something I look forward to! The loss of TV dollars is unfortunate but it feels fresh, exciting and hopeful to me.

This had to happen I guess but how will the 8 schools deal with the loss of revenue? Would be lucky if got 20 million a school.

The numbers I'm seeing are at a minimum in the upper 20's. We may take a cut, but it won't be deadly.

I think it would be very UNlucky if we ended getting less than $25 mil/school. That is still a $10 million dollar haircut, but much more manageable, and comparable with at least the Pac12

I think we'll be finding out pretty soon.... but $10 million (if it comes in around that), is not a catastrophic loss to our annual budget. (maybe 10-15%, or so)
