Tabry Shettron Looks Like Best Cowboy Back Prospect in Years
EDMOND – I know that Talyn Shettron was the more sought after of the two pass catching brothers at Edmond Santa Fe. Talyn was identified as one of the top prospects, actually the top wide receiver prospect in the 2022 class by the recruiting folks at ESPN. However, Tabry Shettron was every bit the important part of this recruiting scenario. Oklahoma State head football coach Mike Gundy was asked about Tabry and he took the ball and ran with it.
”We like Tabry [Shettron]. He's 227 pounds right now. I think he's going to be 255 [pounds] in 18 months. He'll develop into being a good football player for what we ask him to do,” Gundy explained of the process.
I admit that I didn’t see it at first. I thought that Tabry was a jumbo wide receiver, kind of an adarius Bowman-type. However, Santa Fe defensive coordinator and a pretty sharp football man in Chris Rose straightened me out. Rose asked me to look a Shettron’s core and his lower body. When you do, you see a young man that is just starting to physically develop.
“I think it's important we don't try to make him something he's not, but we have to be patient with him,” Gundy said further. “He played cowboy back at Edmond Santa Fe and they split him out some to do some different things but playing that position here is much different. So, we need to give him time as his body develops and all that. I'm going to say 250 in 18 months; (he) should run under 4.8 [seconds]. (The) comparison: Tracy Moore type of body."
Tabry appreciates all of that, but since that night at the Cowboys “Show) camp he has been happy that a school he liked, a school he wanted to be a part of really wanted him.
“I’m glad it’s finally done, and I’m glad to officially be committed to a place. Finally have a family and a home and know where I’m going in the future,” Shettron said after his signing ceremony on Wednesday. “It’s close to home and there are a lot of Santa Fe alumni up there. It’s going to be fun. The coaching staff is amazing. A built-in family there. It doesn’t get any better than that.”
Actually, it does, it gets better when he get there, suit up, and start contributing. He knows that.
“Getting settled in with the team and hoping to play next year,” Shettron answered when asked what he was most looking forward to.
