STILLWATER – Oklahoma State came up short in its series opener against No. 8 Texas Tech Friday night as the third-ranked Cowboys fell by a 7-6 count at O'Brate Stadium.

The loss dropped the Pokes to 34-15 on the season and 13-6 in Big 12 play, while TTU improved to 33-16 and 12-7 in the league.

Jake Thompson and Griffin Doersching both homered for the Cowboys, with Thompson and David Mendham leading OSU with two hits apiece.

Justin Campbell lost for only the second time this season, falling to 7-2, as he allowed six runs on six hits in five innings. The right-hander struck out six and issued five walks.

The Cowboys quickly took the lead on a first-inning homer. Zach Ehrhard drew a one-out walk before Thompson lined an 0-2 pitch into the visiting bullpen. It was Thompson's 12th homer of the season, tying him for the team lead, and it gave OSU an early 2-0 advantage.

The Red Raiders captured the lead with a five spot in the fourth. A triple followed by a double to lead off the inning plated a run. Later in the inning, Cole Stilwell hit a grand slam to left field to put Texas Tech ahead 5-2.

The two teams traded runs in the fifth, starting with TTU in the top of the inning as a walk and a double with one out followed by a sacrifice fly extended the Red Raiders' lead to 6-2.

OSU answered in the bottom of the inning when Chase Adkison doubled down the right field line before Roc Roggio singled through the right side, scoring Adkison from second and reducing the deficit to three.

The Cowboys would manage another run in the sixth. Two singles with a hit batter in the between to open the inning loaded the bases with no outs. After a strikeout, Adkison hit a fly ball to left field that would serve as a sacrifice fly and bring in a run, making it a 6-4 ballgame.

The home team cut its deficit to one in the seventh when Doersching delivered a mammoth home run that sailed over the scoreboard in left field. The 513-foot blast, Doersching's ninth of the season, made the score 6-5.

TTU picked up a crucial insurance run in the eighth, scoring on a wild pitch to go back up by two runs.

In the ninth, OSU made things interesting. After the first two batters were retired, Thompson doubled into the right-center field gap to bring the tying run to the plate in the form of Doersching, who walked to put Cowboys on the corners.

Up next, Mendham delivered an RBI single through the right side to make the score 7-6 and once again put Cowboy runners on the corners. But a pitch that got away from the TTU catcher enticed Jaxson Crull to break for home before he was tagged out in a pickle to end the game.

The two teams return to action Saturday at 6 p.m.
