Run Game Discussion with Gundy. How to Crank It Up?

October 17, 2022

STILLWATER – Mike Gundy said it after the game Saturday in Fort Worth where Oklahoma State fell from the ranks of the unbeatens with a 43-40 loss in double overtime to TCU, the biggest difference in the game was TCU could run the ball against a light box and Oklahoma State, seeing the same light box from the Frogs defense, could not. Gundy came back in his news conference on Monday and said he saw the same thing on video.

"We just couldn't rush the ball effectively. We became one dimensional,” Gundy said virtually repeating the message outside the Oklahoma State locker room at Amon Carter Stadium Saturday. “You become one dimensional, you're much easier to defend. We just weren't very physical. We just couldn't get into a rhythm rushing the ball. We've just got to keep doing the same stuff we're doing and improve."

Now, looking to rebound and realizing that his team is No. 65 in the nation in rushing offense at 155.7-yards a game, averaging 4.0-yards a carry and are not looking for quarterback Spencer Sanders to split as much of the rushing responsibility, I asked: do you flirt with a different scheme, one you may be familiar with but don’t use as much? Maybe you turn to some different backs and get Jaden Nixon or freshman Ollie Gordon some more carries. Dominic Richardson has been good, but his long carry of the season is 19-yards. Explosive runs have been few and way too far between.

Do you change it up?

Gundy seems committed to Richardson and I’ve been impressed at time too.

“I don’t believe in that. I don’t think you can trick a team,” Gundy said clearly defining that his team will stick to the plan. “I don’t think you can change what you do on Tuesday and Wednesday and go out and play well and say, ‘This is going to work.’ That’s me. I don’t think that players are capable of absorbing and understanding concepts and schemes with the multiple defenses that we see nowadays. Years and years ago, (maybe) but I mean I use the term with my staff. You know if we have a guy go down, we’ve got to replace that guy.”

Here’s where it gets a little crazy. Gundy has used travel baseball before. His sons played it, and he is familiar with it.

“Travel baseball is a great example, 12-year-old travel baseball,” he said getting precise. “If shortstop gets hurt and we take the third baseman and move him to shortstop and the left fielder and move him to third and the right fielder move to left and the center fielder right, we could move six people to replace one guy. That’s not what I believe in. So, if we have somebody go down, somebody else needs to replace them. We need to stay in our system. I think we have the best chance of having success versus trying something new and trying to trick the next team.  That’s my opinion.”

You have to love what Nixon has done on kickoff returns, especially the 98-yard return at Baylor.

I agree, you can’t reinvent the wheel or your run package on offense in a week. You can add some counter, maybe some lead to the base zone game. A few plays can always be added. The offensive line needs to be examined. Maybe, you have to plug someone in there if they aren’t getting the job done with run blocking. This team has to be able to run the ball. You have to. Then as far as running back personnel, Jaden Nixon is not as big or mature as Richardson, but he is faster, and his vision may be better. Ollie Gordon is young, but he is 6-2 and 215-pounds. Gordon has the longest run from scrimmage this season at 53-yards and he is averaging 5.5-yards per carry because of it.

"Well as I said, we're going to start working those guys in,” Gundy said. (Jaden] Nixon is showing physicality and he's playing on punt and kickoff return and when he was playing in the game he did just fine. As he evolves, he's earned a right to get more carries. I want to say that it's not necessarily that we need to take them (carries) from Dom. Dom is running good for us, but I'm concerned about his total carries. Ollie (Gordon) gets better every day. He is still a freshman and freshman, you have to be real careful with them at that particular position."

Another option was brought up at Mike Gundy’ s radio coaches show on Monday night.

“We might need to look at Deondre Jackson,” Gundy said. He had some setbacks, and we weren’t able to rep him for a while, but he is getting where he might be able to help. If we feel comfortable with him then we need to see what he can do.”

Jackson is the four-star running back recruit that went to Texas A&M and then transferred to Oklahoma State in the summer. He played little at Texas A&M, but he is 5-11, 215-pounds. He has played a few plays of short yardage this season in 22 personnel. He has one carry for two yards.

“He can run with some power, and he can make some guys miss,” Gundy said of Jackson. He is not a Keith Toston because he can make guys miss. He is in the ballpark of Vernand Morency. He is kind of like Seymore Shaw when he was healthy,”

I get it, but Texas is No. 35 in the nation in rushing defense and is limiting opponents to 118.7-yards a game. They haven’t exactly played any monster rushing teams unless you count Alabama. It looks like Richardson will be the main ball carrier and he should be. I agree with Gundy on Richardson, who as the No. 3 guy averaged 4.7-yards a carry and had a long run of 28-yards.

"He's good,” Gundy said of Richardson. “When he's catching the screens and he's out in space, he's running and doing well. If you envision him getting in space, looks pretty good. We have to get him in space more.”

They do and they have to get him to look up and make moves to get into space. Vince Lombardi (Google it) said it best, “run to daylight,” and he wasn’t talking donuts.

Literally everyone knows we need an o line.

If SS is limited in his ability to throw the ball, our run game is about to get a whole lot worse IMO. After 6 games of observation, our Oline looks to give great effort but for the most part they are not physically strong enough to move the defense when running the ball.

From reading the article I got that we are either going to keep doing what we've been doing, or we are going to insert a third baseman into the field of play.

good Gawd, what I wouldn't give for a Morency or Shaw at RB right now... get Jackson in the damn game.

"He can run with some power and he can make some guys miss," Gundy said of Jackson. He is not a Keith Toston because he can make guys miss. He is in the ballpark of Vernand Morency. He is kind of like Seymore Shaw when he was healthy,"

Mike always likes to reference old Eddie Sutton quips! In this case the quip is the old Eddie mantra DO BETTER!

Anything to hit what holes we make quicker. Our zone blocking is subpar because our linemen are slow footed and not physical and forget cutting off second level defenders due to our lack of mobility on the O-line.

It may be time to gap block using wider splits and use the pistol formation more but honestly, based on Gundy's comments, more of the same zone blocking we can't do well is coming so one dimensional we'll be against anybody with a pulse.

It's a broken record but it is beyond time we get some recruiters for O-linemen in here, sweeten the NIL pot for said linemen and get some players! Texas is starting two freshmen on the offensive line they bought so you have to fight fire with fire if you plan on competing.

Don't like Gundy's take on the running game at all. Basically what he's saying is "We suck but it's too late to make any changes or adjustments". Unbelievable. That sounds like something Pat Jones would say. Get ready for another couple of losses.

I question what people see in the off-season during camps. How did they see this o line and report that it was crazy deep and much improved? This season will go down as another with no o line improvement. I have no idea what we need to do but we will squander every team we have with great potential because we cant dominate on the line. Osu equals no line u at this point it's as consistent as us having good receivers or Gundy being conservative

well..... I never made any of those statements, but thought they would be solid, and they are, better than the RB group and the QB group, and they are.

You do realize that next year the guys will all be red-shirt seniors, we'll have about 7 or 8 seniors or red-shirt seniors.

Experience is what makes a good OLine.

Idk what line you're seeing. Solid is a stretch imo. Average at best. Below average in run blocking. Gundy mentions it almost every week some way we didn't block well. Upperclassman could help next year but for the last 10 plus years it hasn't mattered. And that doesn't help this year.the fact is we just aren't improving in any meaningful capacity. Not enough to change a season outlook that's for sure.

On top of that we aren't stocking the well with great talent. At this point I believe it's fair to say the overall state of our o line room present and future is weaker than needed

well... considering our center is out and we were playing our 3 stringer at center, that affects everything on the line.

Even with that significant interruption, they were still solid. TCU did not really get to Sanders much (a very good team).

We do need to improve on our run game, but like I said, our RBs are sub-par.

Our line has been pretty good the last 10 years, but especially since Dickey has arrived. We had a stretch where we went through Connelly, Adkins, and the OSU guy, where we could not get anybody in the program worth a hoot, but it has dramatically improved since then.

I don't think that you are being objective, and are not considering the state of the program when Dickey took over.

The Oline has improved this season, and will improve further when we get our center back.

I do not think that you are objective and all of your comments are based solely on your emotions.

I am purely being basing it off of what I've seen and what I hear. When the coach says every week after the game well that's what happens when we don't block well then I'm gonna roll with that considering I watched and thought the same thing. You just don't agree with me per usual. Either way we could split hairs but we aren't nearly where we need to be in the o line department. I'm right you're wrong or give versa it still doesn't move the needle on what we need. We need major improvements. When I see it and coach stops talking about it I'll believe we have gotten better.

no, actually I do believe that the OLine needs to improve, and like I said, there are a few reasons for that, injury, new faces, etc.

We lost 3 of our best linemen from last year's team.(Sills, Godlevske and Birmingham), and then we moved Wilson from guard to center, so needed to shift some other folks around. Then Center is like the QB of the Line and calls all the assignments, so changing out centers has an immediate impact.

We're only half way through the season, and have ti.me to continue to improve.

The difference is that I see ample opportunity for improvement as the guys get more experience, and you only see the sky falling.

Gundy said we need to improve, he did not say anything about the future being hopeless, which is the message that you convey

Show me where I said hopeless or skies are falling. I didn't. I did say the overall state of the o line present and future is weaker than needed. One thing you never clarify cali is your expectation. So we are clear I have championship expectations for the present and near future. So I have high expectations of the o line because year in year out that's where we seem to struggle. I do believe you believe it's better than I perceive it but what are your expectations? You really see this line now and in the future putting us in a position to win it all?

I think you are placing too much emphasis on one position group to win a team sport.

We were in a "position" to win it all last year, for Christ's sake, and we're better now.

If Illingworth hadn't transferred, then perhaps we could have won the game last week... it was not the fault of the Oline.

So yes, we are "in a position" to win it all right now, we're one of the few remaining contenders. Will we win it all.. I have my doubts but my doubts are based on our QB and RB, not on our Oline

I officially think YOU have zero merit lol illingworth lost the starting job at Nevada how the help was he gonna win is a game lolololol we lost the big 12 title game because of our line on the goal line 4 times! You dodged my question then continued to make zero sense lol cali I'll never respond to you again hahahaha

Merit? Merit with whom? with you? I don't need it, thanks. And why are you always trying to make this stuff about me, it has nothing to do with me.

Illingworth is not starting because the Nevada OLine is so poor that they needed the other guy who is slightly more mobile, and who is getting absolutely murdered back there. Last I looked his completion percentage was around 50%. Nevada has lots of problems, but Illingworth is not one of them... He has started about 1/3 of their games... so there is that.

the OSU OLine is considerably better than that of Nevada, especially in pass protection. You're comparing mangos and lemmons.

for the record, it seems a stretch to consider that you are capable of "officially thinking". (whatever the heck that even means)
