Oklahoma State Football Recruiting

Cowboys Add Commitment in Stanaland and Likely Another Coming

STILLWATER – Oklahoma State picked up the 11th commitment in the 2023 football recruiting class with Gage Stanaland of Tuscola (Jim Ned), Texas. The 6-4, 280-pound Stanaland was at the Cowboys win over Iowa State on Saturday (Nov. 12) with his dad and had a great time. He literally foresadowed his commitment to Pokes Report on Monday night in a phone conversation.

“It was awesome,” Stanaland said of the atmosphere, the game, and the tour of the facilities. He also met with head coach Mike Gundy. “I loved it all. It was fantstic and it was a great game. My dad agreed and liked it too. We have been praying that we will hear from them and they will offer a scholarship.”

That happened and Stanaland took little time to respond on social media with his answer.

Besides Stanaland, Oklahoma State also hosted Oklahoma City (Putnam City), Okla. defensive end Taje McCoy (6-3, 245) at the Iowa State game and reinforced their scholarship offer with him. It would appear he would be next on the commitment list.

Stanaland in action this season.

Stanaland has started for Jim Ned for three seasons and he was earlier committed to the Naval Academy, but he de-committed and reopened his recruiting when Oklahoma State took interest. This is a tough guy that you can see from his high school video leaves little doubt in his blocking chores. Stanaland has also shown his toughness in another sport as he has competed in Golden Gloves Boxing since 2018 and had considerable success. Wednesday night Stanaland confirmed for us that he was a state champion in Golden Gloves.

“I won a state championship and it was good experience,” he said by phone. “I’m really glad to be committed to Oklahoma State. This is where I want to be.”

Stanaland has helped Jim Ned to an 8-3 season with a 5-0 district championship. The Indians shut out Pilot Point last Friday 41-0 and this Friday (Nov. 18) will take on highly-ranked Bushland (10-1) in a road test for the second round of the Class 3A-Division I playoffs.

Those highlights with Stanaland (55 in white) are fresh from that first round whitewash against Pilot Point. He is the third offensive line commitment in the Cowboys class that also includes Jack Endean (6-6, 280) from Tucson (Tanque Verde), Ariz. and Stillwater standout Jakobe Sanders (6-3, 295). Sanders may be the best offensive line prospect in Oklahoma. Stanaland is part of five members of the offense in the recruiting class including Gretna, Neb. quarterback Zane Flores and Houston (Furr), Texas athlete Camron Heard.

Putnam City High School
McCoy is accustomed to wearing orange.

As for McCoy, he was offered in the summer but there seemed to be a pause in his recruitment. Any pause is out the window and Oklahoma State showed they were full bore in purusing McCoy last weekend. Putnam City ended their season in the playoffs on Friday night (Nov. 11) with a 31-21 loss at Sand Springs. McCoy actually cross over to offense and ran for a nine-yard touchdown in the playoff loss.

https://www.hudl.com/profile/12831680/Taje-McCoy

McCoy had a strong season with 97 total tackles (68 unassisted), 11 sacks, 16 tackles-for-loss, four fumbles recovered, and three fumbles caused. McCoy was a major cog in the Pirates defense all season.

Among others McCoy has offers from Baylor, Iowa State, Kansas, Kansas State, Missouri, Nebraska, Tulane, and Vanderbilt. He was first offered by Oklahoma State in January of this year as reported by Pokes Report. We expect to know something on McCoy soon.

If McCoy commits then he will be the 12th commitment in the recruiting class and the sixth on the defensive side of the ball joining fellow defensive end Jaedon Foreman of Del City, Okla.

Stanza land looks good on his Hudl tape so that is a good sign! Take McCoy has had a great senior year at PC and is a very good edge player, needs to add a little more size!!!

You remember kelvin banks? Blue chip o lineman? Was committed to us then flipped to Texas. Yeah he started year one and their line is much better than ours. People say rankings don't matter. This kid will have a shoulder injury in a few years from trying to pack on to much weight and will probably end up a non factor

I genuinely hope I am wrong and over time proven completely wrong. But, I have never been so uninspired about OSU FB recruiting than I am for 2023. B12 Championships cannot be envisioned given how poorly we recruit year after year

Uh, an example of why Gundy shouldn't waste time on recruits that won't sign.

So don't recruit blue chip recruits?

I get where you're coming from, however that logic is flawed. Also, we didn't have the brinks trucks to back up to his house that Texas did.

Yeah their line was so much better than ours they've lost more games than us, and lost to us.

If a kid is just interested in money then he'll be a kid that will be out of wind in the second half, and leave the UT boosters complaining even more about their poor recruiting.

Welcome to Ok. State young man! I can't wait to see you work your tail off and prove these nay sayers wrong. I am sure you are all heart and will be dedicated. Heart, conditioning and technique takes over when overweight gives out. We have seen that all year. A man can carry so much weight, any more weight hurts you. We didn't see that with Wickline's players.

Flawed? How so.

You can't establish relationships with 50 blue chips that you have next to zero chance of signing. You focus on who fits and who you can invest time on with a real hope of signing. If you think Gundy should chase only 4 and 5 stars I have news, recruiting would be worse.

Everyone wants better players, even Alabama. Even me. But I'm not gonna waste my time bemoaning our recruiting ranking when I have confidence Gundy is doing his best to acquire the best talent (that fits) reasonably possible. Griping, complaining and seeking answers is a fools game with zero hope of a definiitive and implementable plan.

None of that means their line isn't better lol banks is starting for a reason because he is already good enough too and will only get better. Doesn't sound like a kid only worried about money. He earned a starting spot man

Sorry to blow your mind up, but here is the reality. Yes, Banks is good. But he was a waste of time for our coaching staff. And blue chip prospects like him will be even harder to land in the future because of their money demands which means Gundy will likely recruit even fewer going forward. Chew on that.

Yeah and we need to fix that. Not give up on it. We need to compete. Our method isn't working especially on the line

Puleeeease. I really don't think Gundy is giving up on it. He wants a better o-line. Dickey wants a better o-line. Everyone, including Nick Saban wants a better o-line. This is hardly a fresh take.
Pokes4158

I'm not claiming to have a fresh take haha that's the problem it's so not fresh. It's been a problem for a decade. They want it like you say but apparently are very very bad at attaining it. You don't think that's a problem?

If a person accepts nothing short of a B12 title, then yes, I guess the o-line might be a problem. But is it coaching, talent, injuries or just bad luck? Beats me. But I'm confident Gundy is appropriately focused and certainly not ignoring it.

I think they are taking a fresh take on it. We've never stockpiled preferred walk-on lineman that would have been scholarship players elsewhere. With NIL, we can essentially have extra "scholarship-type" offers. And I think OL and DL is the best place to invest. Most lineman take several years to develop from HS to college ready players. There are exceptions, but we're just not going to pull those types of players away from the schools with unlimited $$$ and blue-blood. K. Banks being the perfect example. It's not like we didn't want him and we invested alot of time and money in his recruitment.

I continue to be amazed with all you naysayers questioning the recruits Gundy brings in. He does go after highly ranked kids but it's typically tough for them to commit to OSU now with all the huge money these other schools are offering. Looks at what Gundy does year after year as give me 9-10 wins every year with the occasional Big 12 Championship appearance/win and BCS Bowl game.
Pokes4158

Definitely never made that argument but regardless of number of wins the line is bad and has been for a while
Pokes4158

But they weren't committing long before nil. I trust Gundy and co to find and develop diamonds but need also need to land top end talent. We have all the success and facilities etc we should be able to have both.

Thanks RA. So these are guys that will be on campus as freshmen for the 2023 season - right? 2022 signees (assuming early signing day). Just making sure they weren't early commits 2024 season / 2023 signees. Thanks!

no it isn't that bad, and has been pretty good for a while... what team are you watching?

pretty damned good last year, and aside from the departures and injuries, they're holding their own this year.... successfully defending against the two best defensive lines in the conference (Texas and BU... and ISU)
Pokes4158
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Ok state has one of the worst lines in college football this year. Has anyone seen our run game? Has anyone watched ball the last 10 years? Our best lines the past decade were maybe a little above average but consistently not good. But I remember y'all are cool with barely getting by so I know we have different expectations. We have covered this. You defend mediocrity while I still retain hopes of something greater. That's really all what this whole disparity is about. The people that take opinions and call it negative are the ones that will be happy with mediocrity forever. I want greatness. That's just me. I respect what Gundy has done and love the cowboys but I won't pretend we have things we don't have. Would any of you honestly have confidence in this line if we played in a playoff game? Be real boys just be real

Number 91 in the country in rush offense. Out of 131 teams! Running backs don't block for them selves what are y'all talking about
Pokes4158
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Number 70 in tackles for a loss allowed. For those of you that don't understand what that means I'll explain. The offensive line is tasked with blocking the defensive players in order for the playmakers to move the ball forward on offense. What this mean for us is we are below average in achieving this task. Commonly a trait of an ineffective offensive line. Some would call ineffective not a good. Rarely on occasion some such as yourselves would say that ineffective is actually indeed effective but it is up for debate. I do believe in technical terms ineffective is a negative thing. Negative means not good for those who don't know. Example: our offensive line did not pick up the blocks resulting in a tackle for loss for negative 3 yards.
Pokes4158
How long do you want to ignore this user?
How did we achieve such low measures of success from our offensive line you ask? Well I'll gladly tell you. See what we do is recruit offensive lineman that are very very undeveloped physically and fundamentally. Usually from high schools in areas with minimal competition. They fit our mold of being attainable. I do believe the only criteria we have is that they should be a football player and weigh over 250 lbs. we have quite the track record of landing these types of players. some would say our success in this area is pretty pretty high level. Now this is in comparison to the fcs level obviously but hey we take what we can get right boys?

Actually, we're tied for 69th at 5.7 per game. That is not stellar, but it is definitely not the end of the world or the worst line in the country.

I suppose you failed to notice that Alabama and Clemson are tied at 54th with 5.2 per game (what is the difference between 5.2 and 5.7 per game, when we're comparing our sad sack line versus their star studded lines?)

that Baylor and OU are tied for 57th at 5.3 per game

or that, many of the teams on the rankings and ahead of us, DO NOT play a P5 schedule... gee...I wonder if that could impact statistics.

and you know dang well that we're much better on passing statistics, that you failed to mention.

this team has some issues for sure, but they are not the ones that you're erroneously focused on.
