STILLWATER – Oklahoma State jumped out to a big early lead and never looked back Friday, posting a 19-2 run-rule win in seven innings in its series opener with Austin Peay at O'Brate Stadium. With their third-straight win, the 12th-ranked Cowboys improved to 6-3, while APSU fell to 2-7.
Four Cowboys collected three RBIs in the contest as David Mendham led the way with a 4-for-4 day at the plate. Nolan Schubart also had four hits, while Aidan Meola and Nolan McLean rounded out the group driving in four runs.
On the mound, Juaron Watts-Brown picked up his first win in an OSU uniform as the right-hander allowed one run over six innings and struck out eight for the second consecutive game.
OSU opened their half of the first by batting around and tallying six runs. Mendham brought home the initial run with a double, and two batters later, a single by Schubart made the score 2-0.
After a double by Meola plated two more runs, Marcus Brown smashed his second homer of the season to put the Pokes up by six.
The home team added a pair of runs in the second and one in the third to go up 9-0 before APSU got on the board with its first run in the fourth.
The Cowboys put the game away in the fourth as they erupted for 10 runs on seven hits, with seven different Pokes collecting RBIs. Mendham had two hits and drove in two runs in the inning, while Schubart also had two hits in the frame.
The two teams return to action Saturday at 1 p.m. It appears that Carson Benge will get the start at pitcher for the Cowboys.
