Kenny "Wild Thing" Gajewski Sports a Familiar Look for "Major League" Fans
STILLWATER – Oklahoma State head coach Kenny Gajewski met with the media on Tuesday as did two of his players in third baseman Tallen Edwards and clutch pitcher Ivy Rosenberry. The Cowgirls got gritty last weekend in Waco as they took two-out-of-three from a talented Baylor team.
“That Baylor team is better than any we’ve played recently.” Gajewski said.
The Cowgirls are preparing for a midweek game with Central Arkansas Wednesday and then to host UCF for the first time for a Big 12 Conference series this weekend. They are 20-3 on the season and despite the one loss to Baylor vs. the two wins they are still ranked as high as fourth in the nation (USA Today/NFCA poll) and they are No. 7 (ESPN.com/USA Softball Top 25).
All that said, I had a more pressing question for head coach Kenny Gajewski. He just became a father again with his wife Rachel as they welcomed Gray Gage Gajewski to the world. I asked Gajewski if he minded a personal question. The former pitcher in baseball at Oklahoma and part of their College World Series championship team in 1994.
He has started wearing thick black glasses and I’m seeing a “Ricky Vaughn look from the movie, Major League.”
“It looks a little bit like that,” Gajewski started his response knowing well I was talking about the character played by Charlie Sheen. “I’d been having trouble with my contacts. As a matter of fact, I was shopping and ran into my eye doctor and he said I noticed you are wearing your shades. Come see me if you want to change.”
Gajewski doesn’t. He knows his two older children are giving him grief on social media.
“They hate em, so I’m going to keep wearing them until they like them,” Gajewski said with a grim. “That is my mission now. They are wearing me out on them on social media as well.”
His players, they’re okay with the big black rims. Although, the joke was on me when I asked if they remembered Ricky Vaughn in Major League. Joke was on me as I showed my age.
“No (we haven’t seen Major League), but we like the glasses. They are growing on us,” pitcher Ivy Rosenberry said when asked. “He did actually run out of contacts in Florida. That is why he started wearing them.”
“Then he just rolled with them,” added Tallen Edwards.
Gajewski actually admitted his eyes feel better and less irritated at the end of the day. So like Ricky Vaughn in the movie, the glasses are more comfort and necessity than trying to mess with his kids or his players.
I just like anything that makes me think of that movie, one of my all-time favorites.
