Oklahoma State Beats Texas 7-2 in Series Finale
AUSTIN, Texas – Oklahoma State picked up a 7-2 win over Texas in Sunday’s series finale at UFCU Disch-Falk Field.
With the win, OSU improved to 32-16 and 15-9 in Big 12 play, while UT fell to 30-19 and 15-9 in the league.
Carson Benge shined on the mound and at the plate to lead the way for the Cowboys, picking up the win while going 1-for-3 with a home run and scoring twice.
In his second start of the season, Benge improved to 2-1 as he tossed a career-high 6 2/3 innings, besting his previous career long by an inning, and allowed just one run on two hits. The right-hander struck out five and issued a pair of walks.
Colin Brueggemann, Nolan Schubart and Lane Forsythe each had two hits for the Cowboys, with Brueggemann homering and tying a season high with four RBIs.
OSU used the long ball to jump on top in the third inning. Benge put the Pokes on the board with a solo shot, and following a single by Schubart, Brueggemann delivered a two-run bomb to center field to make the score 3-0. It marked the 13th homer for both Benge and Brueggemann on the season.
The Cowboys added to their lead in the fifth, getting a run on an RBI double off the bat of Zach Ehrhard to extend their advantage to four.
In the seventh, OSU’s lead reached 5-0 when Forsythe drew a walk with the bases loaded, one of four free passes for the Cowboys in the inning.
After Benge held the Longhorns scoreless over the first 6 2/3 innings, the home team finally got on the scoreboard when pinch hitter Jack O’Dowd hit a solo home run to make the score 5-1.
The Cowboys added a pair of insurance runs in the eighth. Benge drew a leadoff walk and Schubart doubled off the wall in center field, and two batters later, Brueggemann ripped a two-RBI single through a drawn-in infield to make the score 7-1.
OSU returns to action with its final home series of the season beginning Friday against Texas Tech at O’Brate Stadium.
