Oklahoma State Baseball Knocks Off No. 15 Mississippi State In Final Game In Houston
HOUSTON – Oklahoma State picked up its second win at the Astros Foundation College Classic with a 9-7 triumph over 15th-ranked Mississippi State Sunday at Daikin Park.
With the win, the 16th-ranked Cowboys improved to 6-4, while the Bulldogs fell to 7-4.
Nolan Schubart went 2-for-4 with three RBIs and homered for the first time this season, and Brock Thompson drove in two runs to lead the Pokes.
Hunter Watkins earned the win on the mound to improve to 2-0 as the right-hander worked five innings and allowed two runs on four hits. He struck out four and issued just one walk.
Sean Youngerman picked up his first save in an OSU uniform as he kept MSU off the scoreboard in the ninth.
MSU jumped out to an early lead on a solo home run by Bryce Chance in the first inning, but the Cowboys answered in the bottom of the frame to tie the score. After back-to-back singles by Garrett Shull and Schubart put runners on the corners, Jayson Jones delivered a sacrifice fly to even the score at 1-1.
The Cowboys broke the deadlock and took command of the scoreboard in the third, rallying for five runs. Aidan Meolabrought home a run with a single, and Thompson delivered a two-RBI double as OSU took a 6-1 advantage.
In the sixth, Schubart smashed an opposite-field, three-run homer into the seats in left field to extend the Cowboys' lead to 9-2.
MSU would mount a rally in the seventh, taking advantage of an error to plate five unearned runs, with a three-run homer by Reed Stallman cutting the OSU lead to two.
But Ryan Ure came out of the bullpen and worked a perfect eighth before Youngerman slammed the door in the ninth to secure the victory.
Up next, the Cowboys open a five-game homestand when they host Winthrop Tuesday for the first of two midweek games before welcoming Illinois State to O'Brate Stadium for a weekend set.
