First Round Misery for Jenkins, for Oklahoma State, for the Big 12

STILLWATER – Forget the mock drafts, forget the Pro Day performance that included a 4.99 in the forty and 36 reps on the bench press test, and forget the fact that Teven Jenkins did not allow a single sack in his last two seasons of college football. Maybe the NFL computed that there weren’t that many credible pass rushers that Jenkins faced. You could make that inference because the NFL did not take a single player from the Big 12 Conference in the first round of the 2021 NFL Draft.

Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports
Roger Goodell never had a card to read on Thursday night with a Big 12 player listed.

Jenkins was listed as a selection in almost all of the first-round mock drafts leading up Thursday night’s opening round in Cleveland. The 6-6, 320-pound Jenkins was most often projected to go to the Chicago Bears with the 20th selection. The problem there was the Bears traded up to the 11th pick and took Ohio State quarterback Justin Fields.

There were four offensive tackles picked in the first round as Penei Sewell went to the Detroit Lions with the seventh pick, Rashawn Slater of Northwestern went to the Chargers with the 13th pick, the Las Vegas Raiders picked Alabama’s Alex Leatherwood at 17, and the Minnesota Vikings nabbed Christian Darrisaw with the 23rd pick.

Both Tulsa (Zaven Collins to Arizona with 16th pick) and Houston (Peyton Turner to New Orleans with 29th selection) had first-round picks when the Big 12 was completely shut out.

North Dakota State with Trey Lance had more first round picks than the Big 12.

There were more Penn State linebackers that opted out of last season drafted in the first round than the Big 12 as there were two with Micah Parsons to Dallas and Jason Oweh to Baltimore.

School/Conference Number of 1st Round Picks in the 2021 NFL Draft
Alabama 6
SEC 12
ACC 6
Big 10 8

This was a real disappointment, not only to Tevin I'm sure, but to Poke fans and alums. It should be a big disappointment to the Big12 in general, being universally passed over in the 1st round. I have genuine concerns about the impact to future recruiting

Will just make hum hungrier, feel sorry for the guys going against him in games next year.

I was surprised your Kansas City boys didn't take a shot at Tevin Robert, because they had glaring issues at offensive tackle when they got into the playoffs last year.

since the Jags have the 1st pick of the 2nd round.... will they select another Clemson players?

The Clemson Jags... (new NFL team)

The Raiders took an OT that had a 3rd round grade. That was clearly the spot for Jenkins.

Yeah, the Raiders always draft strangely it seems like.

I look at the "grades" like I look at recruiting "starts".... they aren't worth much.

Gundy does his own analysis and apparently so do the NFL coaches.

I would trust a "grade" from someone like Mel Kipher about as much as I would trust a main stream media journalist's evaluation of a Biden speech.

how about that 3rd selection NDSU QB.... he probably had a million P5 college offers... LOL

I wouldn't want Jenkins playing for that team anyway.

I'll say I don't watch the NFL so I don't really follow the draft, but I think it probably gets too much pre-draft coverage. Everyone convinces these kids, all kids not just OSU's, that they're all going way before most of them get picked.

I got curious tonight and turned over and the "experts" are giving their top picks for each team and guess what none of those kids are getting picked. I watched 10 straight picks and for each team it was 3 kids out of the same 5 players and every pick was someone not in that group. It may just be time for sports journalists to go back to the I bet they'll get drafted stance as them extent of what they say. Because evidently they don't know as much about the draft picks as they want people to think they do.

Downplaying it would be much better than setting these kids up for disappointment on what should be a great day for them. Coverage needs to go back to how the baseball draft is covered. Some first round speculation then a bunch of wondering where kids will go. It won't be as profitable for the journalists but much better for the kids.

What is it with you?? Why can't you just participate in a discussion by offering your opinion on the subject without going after other posters (and with your fixation on CaliforniaCowboy, I wonder if you have an infatuation...).

You've been given 2 previous warnings, and this is your 3rd. If you can't hear the ice cracking under your feet, you should start listening

Typical because as a poster that claims he doesn't either care about or watch the NFL, you want to argue the consensus opinion about the Raiders 1st round pick as if you have some keen insight into something you care nothing about. Yeah, it's very typical.

Not what I'm saying at all. There are well established reasons why you don't pick a player significantly lower than his evaluation. You really need to become better informed before commenting on a sport you don't follow.

LOL.... got cha... wink, wink, wink...

always pick a kid significantly higher than his evaluations...... got it... chuckle, chuckle, how could I have missed that. Thank you for that pearl of wisdom.

who's evaluations are these anyway? There is only one evaluation that matters and that is the one of the team that is making the selection.

Like NJ said, it looks like none of these guys making projections knows a dang thing about it.....

No. Never pick a kid 43 spots higher than his draft grade. That's like paying Mercedes money for a pick you could get for Chevy money, especially since it was a first round pick. I know this is new to you, but try to pay attention.

yep.... the only real uncertainty is which is the Chevy and which is the Mercedes

I can promise you that the purchaser does not believe that they paid Mercedes prices for a Chevy

I'm fully engaged, thank you.... while some seem perfectly content to let others tell them what value is.... and those people have been wrong only almost all accounts.

regardless, I'm glad Tevin isn't a Traider.

You still don't understand. It's not about whether Jenkins is a Mercedes or Chevy. It's about paying 1st round (Mercedes) money for a guy you could have gotten for 2nd or 3rd round (Chevy) money.

The entire business concept of the draft is not just about putting your own value on every available player, but understanding what the value of every available player has to the league as a whole. The good teams and personnel managers do the best job of getting who they want without overpaying them.

I'm sure every team targets players they believe could be pro bowlers with a draft grade waaay below a 1st round grade. That's why teams sometime trade out of the 1st round so they can still get who they want at a cheaper price while also getting extra picks in the exchange.

Ignoring the consensus opinion about the entire field of players will ultimately result in two outcomes - (1) often overpaying players you really like (because you tend to draft them too high), or (2) missing on players you really like because you spent your early picks on players you could have gotten later.

The Raiders pick of Leatherwood at 17 certainly fits #1 above and maybe even #2 above. That's why they are getting barbecued in the press.

YOU don't understand.... if that is they guy that THEY THINK is the mercedes and is worth mercedes money then it does not matter what you think, or any bozo analyst thinks. Those people were obviously wrong in their original analysis, as NJ pointed out, they are almost always wrong.

The "press" is "BBQing them" because the press has a self-fulfilling prophecy, and they were made to look like the fools that they are.

I'm moving on. Why anybody would bother arguing that some TV show guy knows more than an NFL coaching staff is beyond me.

God bless you.

Here's the absurdity of your view.

Let's say a team's number one need to fill is at RB. Let's say that's teams number one RB target is Chuba. Let's then say that team has the first pick in the draft. YOU would advocate picking Chuba (a 4th - 5th round grade) first ignoring his grade and ignoring the fact you could wait another 125 - 150 picks to get what you want at a much cheaper price.

That's the exact approach someone would take if they ignore what the rest of the league thinks.

That's okay. That's the typical thought process of fans that don't follow the NFL and the business of the Draft.

Ciao.

The "process" is simple to understand, I "got it" from the first post..... you place too much emphasis on what others think. What other people think does not matter. Whatever "value" you place or anybody else places on something or somebody does not matter. There is no crystal ball. There is no right answer. There is no 100% guarantee on anything. It is not science.

It is opinion.... and the only person that matters, does not agree with your opinion. It has nothing to do with me. You disagree with the NFL coaching staff. Only time will tell if the coach was right and the analysts were wrong.

6 posts defending something that cannot be defended is the absurdity.

There is no "business of the Draft", it's a TV entertainment show, nothing more. It is slightly interesting, and totally meaningless.

The analysts are almost never correct.

So, the analysts are almost NEVER correct?

Here's the analysts' average draft grade for picks:
1-10: 93.2
11-20: 89.2
21-30: 86.5
31-40: 86.2
41-50: 82.8
51-60: 81.3
61-70: 73.6
71-80: 68.8 (includes a 55 and 53)
81-90: 71.5
91-100: 69.5

How can these results be the work of analysts that are almost NEVER correct? Do you just say stuff without having any earthly idea what it means?

We both know who is almost NEVER correct.
