LAWRENCE, Kan. – An 11-run sixth inning propelled 20th-ranked Oklahoma State to a 13-4 win in its series opener against Kansas Friday night at Hoglund Ballpark.

With the win, the Cowboys improved to 26-14-1 overall and 9-10 in Big 12 Conference play, while KU fell to 25-22 and 4-12 in the league.

The Pokes collected 17 hits in the contest, with five players recording multiple hits, and eight different Cowboys posted RBIs. Matt Golda led OSU with a career-high four RBI night, while Christian Encarnacion-Strand and Jake Thompson drove in two runs apiece.

On the mound, the Cowboys got a strong performance from southpaw Mitchell Stone, who picked up his first win of the season. In a career-long 7 1/3 innings of work, Stone allowed just three earned runs and struck out four.

The start was just the second of the season for Stone, and he entered the game having pitched only 14 innings in 10 appearances.

The Jayhawks took the game’s initial lead with a pair of runs in the second, one of those unearned, but OSU trimmed its deficit in half on an RBI groundout by Encarnacion-Strand in the third and tied the score on Thompson’s RBI single in the fifth.

Tied 2-2, the game turned in the sixth as the Cowboys mounted a memorable rally. All told, OSU sent 15 batters to the plate in the inning and plated 11 runs on eight hits to take control of the scoreboard.

Justin Campbell got things going with a leadoff double off the wall in center field, and up next, Cade Cabbiness beat out an infield single and a throwing error on the play gave OSU a 3-2 lead.

After Caeden Trenkle and Max Hewitt picked up RBIs to extend the lead, the Cowboys would get three consecutive RBI singles from Encarnacion-Strand, Thompson and Carson McCusker. Later in the inning, Golda provided the big blow as his grand slam with two outs capped the OSU scoring and pushed the lead to 13-2.

Given the big cushion, Stone continued to put up zeroes as he kept the Jayhawks off the scoreboard until the eighth when they managed their final two runs.

Wyatt Cheney shut out KU over the final 1 2/3 and struck out three to seal the win for the Pokes.

The two teams return to action Saturday at 1 p.m.
