Cowboy Baseball Tops Baylor In Extra Innings
STILLWATER – Marcus Brown's sacrifice fly in the 11th inning lifted No. 21 Oklahoma State to an 8-7 win over Baylor in Friday night's series opener at O'Brate Stadium.
With the win, the Cowboys improved to 29-15-1 overall and 11-11 in Big 12 Conference play, while the Bears fell to 29-15 and 9-10 in the league.
Trevor Martin recorded the win on the mound as the freshman improved to 3-0 with three dominant innings of work. The right-hander racked up a career-high seven strikeouts and kept BU off the scoreboard while allowing only one hit.
Offensively, Cade Cabbiness led the Pokes with a 3-for-5, three-RBI night that included a pair of home runs, while Jake Thompson had two doubles and an RBI in five at-bats.
The game saw the two teams combine to leave 33 runners on base, 19 of those by the Cowboys, and commit eight errors, with the Bears guilty of six of those.
The errors proved costly for both teams as a miscue by OSU in the eighth led to a pair of runs scoring as Baylor tied the score at 7-7.
In the decisive 11th, it was OSU's Caeden Trenkleleading off the inning by reaching on an error and then advancing to second on another error, this one on a pickoff attempt.
After Christian Encarnacion-Strand was intentionally walked, Thompson flied out, but another walk, this one to Carson McCusker loaded the bases.
That brought up Brown, who had entered the game as a defensive replacement at second base in the top of the frame. After taking a strike, the freshman lifted a fly ball to center field, and Trenkle tagged up and raced home, sliding in safely with the winning run.
The two teams return to action Saturday at 6 p.m.
