Mike Gundy Discusses the 2021 Signing Class
STILLWATER – With the 2021 early signing period now complete and official for Oklahoma State with 21 signees, which brings the Pokes’ scholarship total back up to 85. Shortly after the completion of the class, we got our first thoughts from head coach Mike Gundy on how this class shapes up.
“Well, I think this is a fantastic class,” said coach Gundy. “As always, we bring really, really quality young men into our culture. It’s interesting in this group, we got the majority of them that we really have a good idea of what they’ll do, we have two or three guys that we think have really, really, really high ceilings. They haven’t reached that point yet, so it’ll be interesting to see how the develop in our program. We always take two or three guys each year that we feel like that can come in and as they develop and buy into our culture, they could potentially be mid to early round NFL picks, or if they don’t, maybe they end up not doing it. But this is a fantastic class; a lot of credit goes to our recruiting office with Todd Bradford and then our coaches who did a great job with all the virtual and FaceTime and phone calls that we had to use based on the virus. I couldn’t be any more proud of them.”
The class is headlined by some really talented high school football players and a good amount of those from Oklahoma: DT Aden Kelley (OK), S Ty Williams (OK), LB Nick Martin (TX), WR Blaine and Bryson Green (TX) and EDGE Collin Oliver (OK).
But Gundy and Co. really consider the DFW Metroplex in-state as well.
“I’ve said this for the past four or five years that the football in the state of Oklahoma is getting better and better in our opinion,” said coach Gundy. “If you look at our roster per capita by Oklahoma players, you’ll see that the percentage is very high of players that we’re having success with from the state of Oklahoma. So, we’re very proud of that. We consider Texas, for the most part, in-state. We’re a four-hour drive from the Metroplex and all that surrounding area and East Texas. Little different when you get into central Texas and the Houston area, but overall, we’re very excited about what the state of Oklahoma offers us.”
This class also features 11 mid-term early enrollees, which you can read about here. This class also had two surprises from a commitment/signing standpoint: 2022 cornerback De’Kelvion Beamon reclassified to the 2021 class and signed this morning and the Pokes picked up a commitment and signature from Utah State running back Jaylen Warren. Warren will be on campus as one of the 11 early enrollees in January.
